Are Invisible Braces Right for You?

Are Invisible Braces Right for You?

Aug 24, 2020

Do you want to straighten your smile? If yes, you’re likely looking into teeth alignment options. Many years ago, patients with crooked smiles had limited options when it came to orthodontic treatment. More specifically, these individuals relied primarily on traditional metal braces to align their teeth.

Fast forward to today, advancements in dental technology have brought on more flexible, convenient, and comfortable options. In particular, invisible braces are fast growing in popularity among adults who wish to straighten their teeth without drawing attention to the same.

Invisible braces, better known as clear aligners, are removable, orthodontic appliances made from a clear, durable, flexible, medical-grade type of plastic. They correct your smile through the application of gentle, persistent pressure on the teeth to move them into their preferred positions.

Steps of Orthodontic Treatment

A dentist starts by conducting a thorough consultation and evaluation to determine the nature and extent of your needs. From this assessment, the dentist creates a treatment plan. Next, the dentist takes your dental impressions. These inform the crafting of your custom invisible braces. Clear aligners usually come in a set. You’re required to switch to the next aligner tray every couple of weeks.

Once you get to your last tray, the dentist determines if your perfect smile has been achieved. If not, additional trays may be requested. If yes, you’ll get a retainer to ensure your ideal smile remains as is. Retainers are orthodontic appliances that keep your teeth from moving to their old positions after realignment.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Invisible Braces

While invisible braces are a discreet, comfortable, and flexible way to align your teeth, they aren’t for everyone. Invisible braces are best suited for adults and older, responsible teens who can stick to the recommended treatment schedule. Younger kids do better with conventional, fixed braces.

Invisible braces work best for crooked teeth that require moderate straightening or teeth that have gaps that need to be closed. For severe cases of misalignment, traditional metal braces are usually the better option.

If clear aligners aren’t right for you, and you’re not keen on metal braces, the dentist may recommend clear, ceramic braces. These are a modification of metal braces. They’re non-removable and feature brackets and wires, except, in this case, the brackets are made of transparent ceramic material.
